LG’s flagship this year boasts of an 18:9 ratio display, the first time ever in a smartphone, offering more viewing space and an immersive experience when streaming videos and playing games. LG G5 Modular Type design: transform the handset with infinite possibilities.

LG G5 camera

When I attended the LG G5 launch, we were told to play more with LG G5. I thought it was just playing with the camera.  What I didn’t know was the LG G5 has a unique modular design and camera.

LG G5 sports the brand’s first-ever Modular Type design, encased in a sleek metal aluminum body and a Slide-out Battery which can easily swap a depleted battery with a fully charged one. They call these unique modular add-ons as  LG Friends. With the collection of companion devices, the G5 can be transformed into a digital camera, Hi-Fi player and more.

LG G5

The LG G5 has two cameras on the rear: one with a standard 78-degree lens and another with a 135-degree wide angle lens, the widest available in any smartphone. The 135-degree lens on the LG G5 offers a viewing angle that is approximately 1.7 times wider than those of existing smartphone cameras and 15 degrees wider than the human eye’s field of view. The wide angle lens makes it easier for users to capture more landscape, taller buildings or larger groups without having to position oneself further from the subject.

It also contains powerful photo effects including Pop-out Picture, Film Effect and Auto Shot. Pop-out Picture combines images taken by the standard and wide angle lens to create a picture-in-a-frame effect. Film Effect can apply nine different film emulators to an image while Auto Shot is an enhanced camera UX which automatically captures the perfect selfie shot when a face is recognized.

LG Friends

But what I am amazed is the LG friends. I was able to play with some of these companion devices. I find the LG 360 cam as the most useful device that I would need in my travels.

LG G5 friends

I had so much  fun dabbling with the LG Friends which is a  new mobile experience far beyond traditional smartphone boundaries. Let me list the LG friends.

LG G5 offers other innovations designed to revolutionize today’s mobile lifestyle:

More than the LG friends is the smartphone itself, is the performance and efficiency of the LG G5. Let us count the ways:

  • Always-on Display – The 5.3-inch Quad HD IPS Quantum display on the LG G5 offers an Always-on feature, the first on a main smartphone display. The concept of the Always-on Display was first introduced in the LG V10 as the Second Screen and now that feature has evolved on to the main display to show the time and date continuously even when the G5 is in sleep mode. This means that you can always see the time at a glance, even during important meetings or when your hands are full.

  • Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 820 Processor – The LG G5 is equipped with the powerful yet energy-efficient SnapdragonTM 820 processor which offers advanced features such as 64-bit performance, Adreno 530 graphics, lower-power Qualcomm® HexagonTM DSP and Qualcomm Spectra™ 14-bit dual image signal processors (ISPs) designed to deliver high resolution DSLR-quality images and additional power savings. The Snapdragon 820 processor also has an integrated X12 LTE modem that supports Category 12 download speeds of up to 600 Mbps and LTE Category 13 uplink speeds of up to 150 Mbps.

  • aptX™ HD: 24-bit Hi-Fi Wireless Audio – The LG G5 is equipped with aptX HD, an enhanced codec that supports 24-bit sound over Bluetooth, delivering rich and clear sound over wireless connections without any loss. When paired with the LG TONE Platinum, users can experience superb quality Hi-Fi audio that sounds amazingly close to the original

  • Qualcomm® Quick Charge™ 3.0 – The LG G5 offers Quick Charge 3.0 for incredibly fast charging. By employing an intelligent algorithm, Quick Charge 3.0 is 27 percent faster and 45 percent more efficient than the previous generation.

  • Low Power Location Estimation (LPLE) Technology – Thanks to this, LG G5 has excellent battery life. This solution enhances the battery efficiency by as much as 49 percent by improving the power consumption related to location-based apps.

“With all the smartphone brands striving for the latest technology and most functional design, LG G5 marries these concepts with the human element of rediscovering the true joy in ‘playing more’,” LGEPH Mobile Communications VP Jay Won said. “We are so excited to bring this highly anticipated and out-of-the-box flagship to the Philippines. LG G5 and Friends play a game-changing role in the smartphone industry, providing devices and opportunities that would help make the most of a consumer’s mobile lifestyle.”

Hands on with the LG V10 : dual screens, two selfie cameras

LG V 10

I got the chance to review the the LG V10 (After the review, the cellphone is returned to LG). Two things struck me aside from its Phablet features:

  1. dual screen ( a tiny screen right above the main 5.7-inch display) , and

dual screen LG V10

You can see the secondary screen on the top right above the main 5.7-inch screen , a 160 x 1,040px line of shortcuts and notifications which is always there. This is useful for those that need to be notified from their various social media accounts. I devote a few hours engaging in social media so these notifications alert me when I need to reply.

2 . two front-facing cameras for a solo and groufie selfie .

selfie cameras from LG V10

Selfie loving users will appreciate these two front facing cameras especially for the groufie shots. Don’t you find it difficult to fit in all your friends during groufies? Well , look at the groufie shot of my sisters and I. We are all relaxed in this photo. No need to squish our heads together.  And the quality of the photo is so clear.

selfie LG V10

I think the solo selfie shot is adquate enough. LG did not need to have two front facing cameras. The group option is good enough.

It feels sturdy but bulky if I hold it on one hand. See my hands are really small. It is heavy because of the steel frame but that is what makes the V10 so sturdy.    This is LG’s launch  of metal on a smartphone, however,  “the metal only resides on the sides, as railings to grip onto.”  It weighs 192 grams, it weighs exactly the same as the iPhone 6S Plus with similar dimensions.

LG V10 smartphone

Okay, I have not yet dropped this phone because of the grippy texture at the back of the phone . The texture at the back of the phone increases friction and grip. ever. It’s a stiff, textured rubber that doesn’t feel horrible and gives the phone some grip. LG calls it the “Dura Skin” — , “a stiff, textured rubber which gives the phone some grip.”

LG V10 back

Most mobile phone owners always ask me so “how is the phone?”. It is an important requirement for most mobile phone buyers, at least for moms like myself. As to the phone camera, photo quality is amazing. I notice that it takes time to focus if I compare it with the iPhone 6 where I never have focus problems. I am into succulents and cactus and I have been taking photos of them.  No filters have been used here. I just resized for optimization.

Doesn’t this salad look appetizing ? It’s Tinapa and quinoa salad with honey balsamic vinegar. It also has mixed greens, salted egg, tomatoes, pickled onions. The other dish we had was garlic flatbread, the 4 cheese and truffle kind, with mozzarella, cheddar, ricotta, bleu cheeses and drizzled with truffle oil.

Here are few more shots. This is Chinese lumpia that I bought from the weekend market.

It would have been great to take a landscape photo of the countryside.  If you are looking for a phablet with a brilliant camera , which also takes beautiful selfies and groufies, then the LG V10 is it. The SRP is 37,990 pesos but you may be able to get a discount with cash transaction.

LG G3: Simple is the New Smart

I have been looking forward to the launch of LG Mobile’s newest flagship, the LG G3 because I have heard from fellow tech bloggers that it is the best smartphone in the market today. According to LG mobile, the G3 was hailed “Best smartphone in the world”, “New King of Android”, and “Smartphone of the year” by many local and international pundits.

LG G3 auto focus

I was able to test the 13 megapixel camera with its combination of Optical Image Stabilization Plus (OIS+) for clear photos even with shaky hands and low light settings. This is so useful to citizen advocates like myself when we need to take photos quickly. With the world’s first laser auto focus for fast and accurate auto-focusing and dual LED flash, the photo is really crisp. For the selfie, I simply clenched my fist for the G3 to recognize and automatically shoot in 3..2..1.

LG G3 selfie

With a pixel density of 538 ppi, the G3’s Quad HD displays sets new viewing standards producing images that are even sharper and more vivid than full HD displays. At 5.5 inches, LG G3 boasts of a screen ration of 76.4% with thin bezels all around.

LG G3 thin

I have yet to review the G3 but let me list down simpler yet smarter user experience (UX) features not found in previous LG Smartphones.

1. Smart keyboard- makes typing messages all the more intuitive with smart offerings of Keyboard customization for the user’s convenience. Word Preview for seamless word completion, and word edit for quick and easy correction,

2. Smart notice- provides suggestions and recommendations based on user behavior, phone usage patterns , and location to offer user information when it’s needed the most.

3. Smart Security- offers a number of enhanced security features such as the trademark Knock code which enables users to wake and unlock their device just by “knocking” a customized code, the Content lock which keeps personal files hidden from view when sharing the G3 with others and the Kill switch which gives the owners the ability to disable their phones remotely in case of theft.

LG g3 phone
The LG G3 is available in four colors- Metallic black, silk white, shine gold, and burgundy read. Its 16 GB variant is priced at 29,990 while the 32 GB variant retails for 33,990 all on cash basis transaction.

LG opens pre-order promo for G3 & get P3,400 worth of premium LG accessories

LG Philippines is now giving its Filipino consumers the chance to be one of the first to own the much anticipated LG G3. I am anticipating its July 1 launch after techie friends told me that LG G3 is the best phone in the market today. Unbox.ph posted their initial review, “As far as initial impressions go we’re all praises for the LG G3. It was purposefully made to be stylish, beautiful, and different. It might not be waterproof like the Z2 or as durable like the Galaxy S5 but it still sets itself apart through the display and the unique design/build.” Last week, I got to talk to Abe Olandres and asked his recommendation for a smartphone. He said “LG G3” because of the laser autofocus. I will definitely need that feature when I need to take photos in a snap. Yugatech adds ” In theory, this should give the G3 faster focus which is very essential when shooting moving subjects, or when in low-light conditions. Combine that with the G3?s 13 megapixel sensor with Optical Image Stabilization and you’re looking at a very capable smartphone shooter.”

So, if you are interested in owning an LG G3, take advantage of their pre-order promo.
